Experience:
Mr Shaw qualified from Oriel College, University of Oxford in 1997 before developing an internationally recognised urology practice in the North East of England. He took up a research fellowship at the University of Indiana, the highest rated paediatric urology training facility in the USA. His research focussed on the development of the obstructed bladder and led to the award of a Doctorate of Medicine.
Mr Shaw trained as a urology specialist in the North East of England and was appointed to the specialist register for urology in 2009. He has held the post of consultant urological surgeon at the Freeman Hospital since 2009 where he has been clinical lead for urology in Northumbria and from 2022, clinical director for quality and patient safety.
Mr Shaw has a varied surgical practice, offering a wide range of operations and has developed an international reputation in the management of renal stone, prostate enlargement and prostate cancer diagnosis. He has lectured and taught across the world on these topics.
Mr Shaw has worked nationally on the development of clinical guidelines and quality standards in medical practice, including the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). He is research active, having published many peer-reviewed research articles, together with invited reviews and clinical book chapters. Currently, Mr Shaw is principal investigator for a large National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)-sponsored trial investigating thromboembolic disease in surgical patients.
